November’s Monthly Reading Focus: Inferences

Published by under Uncategorized

The Monthly Focus

November’s Focus…

Inferences

An inference is based on information stated in the story or text, as
well as what is already from personal experiences which may relate
to the passage being read. This level of comprehension requires the student to use more reasoning skills than factual recall. Students need to be given the opportunities to predict outcomes, draw conclusions, or make inferences after several facts have been given. Making inferences requires students to “read between the lines” based on the information offered by the author in text. Once students understand this concept, they will be able to construct meaning from the story and apply the skill for better comprehension.

You can help your children gain this skill while reading the newspaper, a magazine, or a book. As you read these texts together, stop at a place where the child can make an inference about some information in the text. Explain to your child that authors don’t always directly tell you everything you need to know about a story. If they did, it would lead to a boring story full of explanations instead of interesting details. Model the inferencing process for them by “thinking aloud” as you make an inference from the text. For example, you could tell your child that even though the author never tells you the main character of the story is happy, you can infer this because he is smiling and laughing. Then let your child have a chance to do the same sort of inferencing at another point in the text.

Practicing this very important skill at home will support the work we are doing this month in reading as well as develop your child’s overall reasoning skills.
